A Flexible Identity for an Annual Sustainability Brand
Project Name:
ECO Festival Brand Identity
Role:
Design Lead
Timeline:
4 months
Project Overview:
ECO is Larta Institute’s Los Angeles–based festival and ecosystem focused on sustainable innovation. I served as Design Lead, developing the full brand and visual identity over approximately four months as part of a year-long initiative.
The system needed to work across event signage, digital promotion, and long-term branded materials—while aligning with Larta’s existing brand equity.
Outcome & Impact:
The identity quickly became a recognizable anchor for the event, helping ECO stand out in LA’s crowded sustainability scene and build equity beyond its affiliation with the parent organization.
The system continues to support ECO as a repeatable, adaptable brand—capable of evolving annually without losing its core identity.
The Challenge:
ECO required an identity that could feel of-the-moment without being disposable.
The brand needed to:
-
Coordinate with Larta Institute’s established visual language
-
Scale across annual iterations (e.g., ECO24 –> ECO)
-
Be immediately recognizable and legible in high-visibility environments
-
Balance institutional credibility with approachability and energy
The goal wasn’t a one-off event look, but a system that could evolve year over year without losing cohesion.
Design Approach:
Rather than introducing an entirely new typographic voice, I built the system using Larta’s existing typeface—modifying and scaling it to create a logo that was readable, flexible, and visually confident across formats. Reworking Larta’s existing type allowed the system to feel cohesive with the parent brand while remaining distinct and highly legible at scale.
To subtly reinforce ECO’s relationship to Larta without overpowering the identity, I integrated the “Larta Institute” wordmark within the “O” of the ECO logo—positioning the festival as a distinct brand powered by Larta.
The visual language was supported by a set of organic embellishments and a vibrant color palette designed to signal sustainability while remaining bold enough to stand out in crowded event and digital spaces.
Restraint in typography paired with expressive supporting elements allowed the system to scale across both institutional and promotional contexts.
